I recently finished this homage of a 1944 Panerai “fuzzy’ dial and thought I would share it. The movement fitted is a genuine Swiss Unitas 6497 low beat movement (without a small Seconds hand) Serviced Dec 23. I created this watch to emulate the Panerai 3646. Dear Vintage Lovers, Yesterday VDB brings my baby back to me. I AM SOOO HAPPY!!! First here are some Gen Pics of the Inspiration: First Version: 47mm 3646 Repcase Strongly shaped 1:1 Molnija Movement `54 aged Hands Marina Militare Dial with red Numerals according to aged Radiomir Big Caseback 1:1. Specs: Old River 47mm case with springbars built in the lugs wires for quick strap changes. Ross dial resin filled and painted blood red. Athaya hands with their fake bluing stripped down to the brass and relumed. Gordon crown and tube. A6497.
The first dials made by Panerai and rarely found on some of the earliest 3646 from 1940, are so-called “plastic rivet” dials. These dials were extremely fragile and prone to deformation (warping) when exposed to a heat source such as the sun, etc. The picture you have included in your post is an homage to the 3646, made by Rolex for Panerai. It was a very large watch 47mm with a long strap. At the time, the Italian frogmen who used these timepieces could strap them to their leg while sitting on top of their manned torpedo submarines.
