Doing all kind of Rolex Models Crystal, Dial, Hands, Dateweel, Bezel ModificatonsOne of Rolex’s clearest and most legible readouts, our Frankenwatch’s face was stolen from the thoroughly modern yet retro-inspired GMT-Master ref. 216570, the 40 th anniversary edition first released in 2011.
Finally complete after 12 months of hard slog, i present my 1971 1655 Explorer 2 for your comments and feedback. Many Thanks to Ubiquitous for his advise in terms of re-shaping the crown guards,hopefully not too bad a job for my first attempt. Not a cheap project, but nowhere near what the asking. The term ‘Frankenwatch,’ gets thrown around a lot, often as a catchall to describe a watch that isn’t in original condition, or possibly has faked components. But that’s turned it into something of a misnomer.
I only discuss Rolex here, since Rolex replicas are at the level where they can take gen parts easily. Most common mods are a swap for gen crystal. Then generally dial/hands for the white gold nature of the markers and the hands. My super franken 1601 Datejust. You guys will laugh your guts out on this one, but I think its pretty cool and much nicer than the grandfather grade 1601 steel datejust. No harm done, everything is reversible except the dial which I still have in case I . I somehow obtained a Rolex 3000 movement (the COSC version used in 14060 and 14270, not the Air King 14000 / 14010 version), gen 14060 dial, gen 14060 hands, and gen 703 crown. Building your own Rolex almost from “scratch” is just fun for some, like myself. I also like cars and fixing/upgrading it is as fun as driving it.
What's the point of these super frankens that cost thousands of dollars? Since they are counterfeit items they are worthless, so why not just buy gen at that point? Gen has value.
