Panerai is undertoned and known for its association with the Decima Flottiglia Mas, the Italian Commando Frogmen. Pioneers of the underwater wristwatch, Panerai provided high-calibre instruments to the Regia Marina (the Italian Royal Navy). This watch belonged to pioneering Decima Flottiglia MAS member Ernesto Notari who after the war commanded the special units. It is exhibited in the Naval Museum of La Spezia. The watch features a 1950s Radiomir dial and updated hands.

In the early 1950s, Panerai created a new generation of compasses. The use of Villa Carmela and the Olterra as secret starting bases for night-time missions showed the decisiveness of the Decima MAS and its courageous men – one of whom was Ernesto Notari.
