I have smaller ( just under 7" ), but very flat wrists, that can wear larger watches..but I have to keep the width in mind. To complement its larger diameter, the lugs of the new 40mm Explorer 224270 are set 21mm apart, and while this does slightly limit the number of available strap options (compared to either 20mm or 22mm), this is the same lug width that you will find on many of Rolex’s other current-production models, such as the Submariner and Datejust 41.

Unfortunately, I can’t find my digital callipers, but using a measuring tape, it looks to be 46.5mm. maybe 47mm, but no more than that. Looks like the case is a touch less "bulbous" where the lugs attach to the sides of the case. The lugs attach closer to 9:30 and 2:30 vs 10 and 2. Hour hand is a touch longer in the point and maybe slightly thinner in the piece that connects the mercedes circle to the post.
