The Submariner ref. 5508 is a “Small Crown” variety, featuring a 6mm crown (for comparison, the “Big Crown” Submariners included 8mm crowns) and a slightly slimmer case. Rolex produced the Submariner 5508 until 1962 and its production run overlapped with other models like the Submariner 6538, 5510, and 5512. Crown: Rolex adapted its water-resistant, screw-down crown design from the 1920s — which used a gasket and a receiving tube housed within the watch case — for use on the Submariner. The Twinlock system made use of two O-rings for a water-resistant seal, while the more modern Triplock system from the 1970s uses an additional O-ring.

Launched at the end of 1957, the reference 5508 represents the final evolution of the “Small Crown” Submariner.
