I.E. exploring, fighting off preds, getting to rare mats in dangerous areas, etc. On the server I play on if you tame anything with more then 119 wild levels (level 80 tame with max taming) you can level it up but if you were to tame a level 80 with an admin do . Tames over level 40 not gaining XP
There is a way to allow your pets to attain any level and level up but takes fiddling with numbers we don't get in SP mode.You can actually change how every single stat . If we tame something and get it to come out to 39, it will gain levels like normal until it is maxed out, but at 40 or higher it just sits at 0.0 / 10 XP. I have tried admin spawning .

So I found a level 116 pig in the FP and taming it. So it shot up to 173 but now it won't level any further, as in it's still sitting on 0xp and not accumulating at all even though it's still on "level 1" .
